Glorious Pine
May you be given a chance to resurrect from the fires. May you continue for generations to teach us.
Glorious Pine/Altadena, California
We received from the arborist
a litany of the horrors
you endured
as, first, the winds screamed
their battle cry,
then advanced – without so much
as a whisper of empathy
or willingness to launch
a diversionary attack
to lure fire’s long, blue-knuckled fingers
elsewhere
O, Glorious Pine,
brought neither to your knees
nor felled,
teach my grandson, please,
to believe
in patience, in resilience,
in deeply rooted knowing,
in trust and, above all,
in the sky
beneath our feet
That we may pour each elixir
like rain into a chalice
over your charred stillness
and staunch, eucharistic magnificence –
Earth exhaling breezes, relieved
we recognize
it is not yet your time

This is so beautiful Jeni- it takes my breath away. There is a stillness in this piece that I just love so much!
Beautiful and wise, Jeni.
I grew up visiting the ancient redwoods in CA. Trees have a lot to teach us. 🙏
